Swing Tilting Disc vs Butterfly Tilting Disc Check Valve: Structure, Application and Selection Guide
Tilting disc check valves are widely used in municipal water supply, sewage treatment, pumping stations and industrial circulating water systems for backflow prevention and pipeline protection. In actual engineering procurement, swing tilting disc check valve and butterfly tilting disc check valve are the two most common types. Although both belong to the tilting valve series and feature low flow resistance compared with traditional check valves, their mechanical structures, closing principles and applicable working conditions vary greatly. This article analyzes their core differences and provides professional selection guidance for pipeline engineers.
The swing tilting disc check valve adopts a single-piece disc and edge hinge swing structure, usually equipped with an external counterweight for reset assistance. The entire valve disc swings around the side hinge to complete opening and closing movements. This straight-through structural design delivers extremely low fluid resistance and large flow capacity, making it highly suitable for large-diameter main pipelines. With fewer internal vulnerable parts, the swing tilting structure is robust, durable and easy to maintain. Its only shortcoming is the relatively long swing stroke, which results in slower closing speed and limited water hammer resistance, making it more suitable for pipelines with stable and continuous flow.
Different from the swing type, the butterfly tilting disc check valve adopts a central shaft double-disc symmetrical tilting structure. The two semicircular discs tilt at a small angle to realize opening and closing, featuring a shorter stroke and faster response. Equipped with built-in spring assistance, the valve can achieve precise two-stage slow closing, which effectively absorbs reverse flow impact and suppresses water hammer and pipeline vibration. Compact and lightweight, the butterfly tilting design saves installation space and performs excellently in frequent start-stop scenarios, such as pump station outlets and industrial circulating water pipelines.
